Korean Traditional Culture 1 (한복, 한국 나이, 온돌, 돌잡이)

 

 

1. Hanbok 한복

 

한복[Hanbok] is the traditional Korean dress. 

In the past, Koreans wore Janbok everyday. but now, we mainly wear it during special days like traditional holidays (e.g., Korean New Year) or wedding days.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

2. Korean age 한국 나이

 

Under the Korean age system, you are already 1 year old when you are born because Koreans also take into account the time you spent in your mother's womb. So you always have one or two more years than your international age. And you get one year older each January 1st, not on your birthday. 

 

 

 

 

 

3. Ondol 온돌

 

온돌[Ondol] is Korean traditional floor heating system. Ondol is the predominant heating system in all Korean homes, even modern appartments, Heats comes up from the bottom, warming up the air inside. So people don't wear shoes at home, we wear socks, or go barefoot. 

 

 

 

 

 

 

4. Doljabi 돌잡이

 

 돌잡이[doljabi] is part of Korean traditional culture. At a baby’s first birthday, we make a party for him. We invite many people. In this party, parents let the baby pick up one thing among various items. We believe that we can thus foresee the baby’s future. 

 

Pencil means ‘becoming smart’

Microphone means ‘becoming singer’

Bill means ‘becoming rich’

Thread means ‘living long'
